Working with partner breeders, pet owners, zoos, wildlife services, parrot sanctuaries, and the public we are attempting to successfully breed these parrots to help increase their captive populations. These populations may be the last of their kind in years to come. Eventually we may need to use them to reintroduce, or help recover, severely declining populations of these wonderful birds into the wild.
Within our program we use techniques proven by other breeders that give captive parrots a real chance at maintaining the wild traits. We will not pull eggs from the parents and artificially incubate in fear of birds abandoning them as it is detrimental to their species as a whole. Why? Well, it has been proven that over generations birds in captivity can loose some instincts to sit and hatch out babies when they are constantly pulled. Even in the wild, birds will sometimes abandon eggs, but these birds are generally less successful at producing offspring and passing on the genetics that help the species survive.
This program will require us to dedicate countless days, months, and years of research to locate singles and pairs of some of these birds. Remaining active in this program also comes with a heavy financial burden. With the public’s help we can work with all available resources to find these birds and work on getting them involved in breeding programs. So if you know of anyone who may have a very rare bird and they are interested in helping, just look through our Endangered Parrots page. If the bird is listed, e-mail us or call us with info. We may at least be able to bring two people with the same species together to start the breeding process.
